KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. – The Mardi Gras Casino and Resort officially reopened after months of being closed to slow the spread of COVID-19, and has now announced the launch of a new West Virginia sports betting app.
The new Betly Sportsbook app is giving West Virginia residents and visitors a chance to bet on sports from anywhere within the state’s borders. This is the first sportsbook app for Mardis Gras Casino since BetLucky went offline in March 2019.
Sportsbooks at Mardi Gras Casino and Resort in Nitro and Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack opened at 3 p. Thursday, according to a news release from Delaware North, the casinos’ parent. The mobile app services both the Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island Hotel, which are owned by Delaware North. It launched in late December, joining WV sports betting with New Jersey and Nevada as the only states with legal online sports betting. The BetLucky Sportsbook App.
“Any way that we can talk and communicate to our guest and bring our very high guest service brand standards into the comfort of your own home, and into your hands is an added benefit in being a Mardi Gras guest,” saidEric Althaus, President, and GM of Mardi Gras.
Players will also be pleased to know that the legal sports betting app also offers an increase from the retail sportsbook in what players can bet on with the many live betting options.
With the Betly app, players can experience placing wagers on consistently updating odds throughout many different sporting events which could also lead to more chances to win and bigger payouts.
The COVID-19 shutdowns had big effects on the casino business and once the casino reopened in June it worked hard to get guests back in action safely.
“We only opened with slot machines and one bar at first,” said Althaus of the process. “We were able to add table games soon after and then the hotel soon after that. We continue to analyze what makes the most sense and what our guests want.”
All guests in the Mardi Gras Casino are required to wear a mask and take a temperature check and Althaus has stated that the casino has seen great success in health and safety.
“We have yet to have any incidents,” said Althaus. “We are very happy to say we have no COVID cases internally or externally with internal guests or our associates. We are still shutting down, not open 24 hours a day, to make sure we can do a deep cleaning on-site.”
The launching of the Betly app will help enhance the West Virginia sports betting experience along with the casino and will keep more people safe while still enjoying wagering on their favorite teams.

Mardi Gras sports betting
Mardi Gras Casino opened a sportsbook in December 2018. It didn’t last long, however, as it was then forced to close down on March 6, 2019.
A contract dispute between Delaware North, the casino’s owner, and its WV sports betting partner, Miomni left the casino without a sportsbook. Now, Delaware North is in search of a new partner to supply sports betting services to the property.
Before it closed down, the sportsbook was located on the main casino floor. It is next to the off-track betting parlor. There is an attached sports bar. It will likely return to this location once the casino is able to accept bets again.
Sports available at the time included football, baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, tennis, auto racing, soccer, boxing, and mixed martial arts. Straight bets, parlays, teasers, props, and futures are all accepted.
